Cooling pillows
Most pillows labelled "cooling" are not structurally cooler. The ones that work have a reason — open-cell gel, pocket springs, or both.
What makes a pillow actually cooler
A pillow feels warm when the material around your head traps body heat and has no way to release it. Standard foam — including most memory foam — is a closed-cell structure. Air cannot move through it. Heat builds up and stays.
A genuinely cooler pillow solves this at the construction level, not the surface level. There are two structural approaches that work.
The first is open-cell gel. Adjustable fill fill consists of small open-cell beads with gaps between them. Air circulates through the fill continuously. Heat does not accumulate because it is constantly being displaced. This is how the Spacepillow works — no foam core, no trapped heat, no off-gassing.
The second is pocket springs. A pillow with springs inside has permanent air channels running the length and width of the fill. These channels are structural — they exist because of the spring geometry, not because of a coating or treatment. The Viscospring Signature uses this construction, combined with a memory foam comfort layer that has 2,000 micro-perforations to maintain airflow even through the foam.
Surface treatments — gel coatings, "cool-touch" covers, phase-change materials — can feel cold initially but do not address the underlying heat retention of the fill. The effect fades within minutes of contact.

How the constructions compare
The ones with structural cooling do. Adjustable fill and pocket spring construction both reduce heat accumulation at the fill level — not because of a coating, but because of how the material or structure allows air to move. Surface treatments (gel coatings, cool-touch covers) provide a brief cold sensation but do not solve the underlying retention problem.
A cooling pillow uses fill made of small open-cell gel beads rather than foam or fiber. The open-cell structure means air moves freely between the beads continuously. A cooling pillow reduces heat around the head and neck, which is one contributor to night sweats. It will not address night sweats caused by hormonal or medical factors — those require a different intervention. For heat-related night sweating that is not medically driven, a structural cooling pillow is a reasonable first step alongside breathable bedding.
A standard memory foam pillow has no air channels — the closed-cell structure retains heat. The Viscospring Signature has 60 independent pocket springs creating permanent air channels, and 2,000 micro-perforations through the memory foam layer. Heat dissipates rather than accumulates.
