Why Is My Weighted Blanket Too Hot?

Why Is My Weighted Blanket Too Hot?Why Is My Weighted Blanket Too Hot?

I've slept under weighted blankets for years, and the "too hot" problem is the one I get asked about most. Here is the honest answer.

Short answer

  • The cover fabric matters most. Bamboo viscose and cotton sleep coolest; minky, fleece, and sherpa trap heat.
  • Glass-bead fill runs cooler than plastic pellets, because the blanket stays thinner.
  • Added polyester fibrefill is the main heat trap. Beads-only blankets run cooler.
  • For persistent heat, use a cooling weighted blanket, and keep the room at 16–19°C.

A weighted blanket feels too hot for three main reasons: a low-breathability cover, extra polyester fill added for softness, and the weight pressing the fabric against your body, which reduces airflow. Fill type, room temperature, and bedding add to the effect. The blanket itself is rarely the whole problem. The fabric and the setup usually are.

A weighted blanket is a blanket weighted with glass beads or plastic pellets, usually to around 10% of body weight, to create a calming deep-pressure feel.

Why does a weighted blanket trap heat?

A weighted blanket sits closer to your body than a normal duvet. The added weight compresses the space between you and the fabric. Less air moves through that space. Trapped air holds body heat.

Three factors decide how warm this feels:

  • The cover fabric and how well it breathes.
  • The fill, and whether soft fibrefill is added around the weight.
  • The weight itself, which flattens loft and reduces airflow.

Fix one factor and the blanket usually feels cooler. Fix all three and heat stops being an issue.

Does the fill material affect temperature?

Yes. Weighted blankets get their weight from either glass beads or plastic pellets.

Glass bead fill is a fill of fine, sand-like glass microbeads that add weight with minimal bulk.

Glass beads are small and dense. They add weight without much bulk, so the blanket can be thinner and flatter. A thinner blanket traps less air and sleeps cooler. Plastic pellets are larger and lighter per bead. To reach the same weight, the blanket needs more of them, which adds bulk and holds more warmth.

Fibrefill is a soft layer of polyester wadding added around the weight for a plush feel. It also insulates and holds heat.

The bigger heat problem is fibrefill. Many blankets add a layer of soft polyester around the beads for a plush feel. That layer holds warmth against the body. A weighted blanket with beads only, and no added fibrefill, runs cooler.

Which weighted blanket fabrics sleep coolest?

Weighted blanket fabrics compared: cool bamboo viscose next to warm minky

The cover fabric decides most of the temperature feel. Bamboo viscose feels cool to the touch and is the coolest common option. The NOXNOX Bamboo Weighted Blanket uses a bamboo viscose cover for this reason.

Cover fabric Breathability Feel Best for
Bamboo viscose High Cool to the touch, smooth Warm sleepers, summer
Cotton High Neutral, soft Year-round, natural preference
Standard polyester Medium Varies Cooler rooms, budget
Minky Low Plush, warm Cold rooms, winter
Fleece / sherpa Low Very warm Cold sleepers, winter

Some weighted blankets are dual-sided: one warm side and one cool side, so the same blanket works across seasons.

What is a cooling weighted blanket?

NOXNOX cooling weighted blanket with a CoolFlow breathable cover

A cooling weighted blanket is a weighted blanket built to release heat instead of holding it. It combines glass-bead weight with a breathable or heat-releasing cover, and skips the insulating fibrefill layer.

This is different from a standard weighted blanket, which prioritises softness and warmth. A cooling version keeps the deep-pressure feel but is designed for warm sleepers, warm rooms, and summer. At NOXNOX, this cooling construction is branded CoolFlow™. The Cooling Weighted Blanket uses it, alongside the breathable options in the cooling range.

Is it the blanket or the room?

Sometimes the setup matters more than the blanket.

  • Room temperature: a bedroom above 20°C makes any blanket feel warmer. Around 16–19°C suits most sleepers.
  • Layering: a weighted blanket over a thick duvet stacks insulation. Use one main top layer.
  • Mattress and sheets: memory foam and flannel hold heat. Breathable sheets help.
  • Personal factors: hormonal changes, some medication, and menopause raise night-time heat. This is physiology, not the blanket.

Check these before assuming the blanket is at fault.

How do I stop my weighted blanket from overheating?

Practical steps, from easiest to most effective:

  • Lower the room to 16–19°C.
  • Use the blanket as your only top layer.
  • Switch to breathable cotton or bamboo sheets.
  • Use a breathable duvet cover on the blanket, or its cool side if it is dual-sided.
  • Choose a blanket with a bamboo viscose or cotton cover.
  • Choose a glass-bead blanket with no added fibrefill.
  • For persistent heat, use a purpose-built cooling weighted blanket.

Should hot sleepers avoid weighted blankets?

No. Hot sleepers do not need to give up the calming, deep-pressure feel of a weighted blanket. They need the right construction: a breathable cover, glass-bead fill, and no insulating fibrefill. A cooling weighted blanket delivers the same weight and pressure while releasing heat rather than holding it.
