Pocket Spring vs Memory Foam Pillow: Which Should You Choose?

Pocket Spring vs Memory Foam Pillow: Which Should You Choose?Pocket Spring vs Memory Foam Pillow: Which Should You Choose?

Memory foam pillows are known for their contouring feel. Pocket spring pillows use a different approach: individually wrapped springs provide elastic support beneath the head. Both can be comfortable, but they respond differently to pressure, movement and changes in sleeping position.

So which should you choose?

The answer depends on how you like your pillow to feel, how much height you need and whether you prefer slow contouring or a more responsive support structure. There is also a third option: a pillow that combines pocket springs with a memory foam comfort layer.

This guide compares the constructions, their practical advantages and limitations, and the questions worth asking before buying.

Pocket spring vs memory foam pillow: the short answer

Choose a memory foam pillow if you prefer a surface that gradually conforms to the shape of your head and neck.

Consider a pocket spring pillow if you prefer a more elastic response and support provided by an internal spring structure.

Consider a hybrid spring-and-foam pillow if you want the contouring feel of memory foam with a responsive spring core underneath.

None of these constructions is automatically best for everyone. The appropriate pillow height and comfort remain essential.

How does a pocket spring pillow work?

Pocket spring pillow

A pocket spring pillow contains small metal springs, each enclosed in an individual fabric pocket. When pressure is applied, the springs compress and respond independently within the construction.

The springs provide an elastic support system. Additional comfort layers, such as polyester fibre or viscoelastic foam, determine how the pillow feels against the head.

This is similar in principle to pocket springs used in mattresses, although the dimensions and construction are adapted for pillows.

One useful distinction: a pocket spring pillow is not the same as a feather pillow. The support comes from mechanical springs, not from feathers or down.

Italian-made NOXNOX spring models use a construction with 60 individually wrapped pocket springs. You can compare the different models in our Pocket Spring Pillows guide.

How does a memory foam pillow work?

Memory foam pillow

Memory foam is a viscoelastic polyurethane material. It changes shape under pressure and gradually recovers when the pressure is removed.

When you rest your head on a memory foam pillow, the material conforms around the areas in contact with it. The speed and extent of this response depend on the foam formulation, density, temperature and pillow design.

Memory foam pillows are available in several constructions:

  • Solid memory foam: A shaped foam core, often with a contour designed to support the head and neck.
  • Shredded memory foam: Smaller foam pieces that can be redistributed. Some models allow filling to be removed to adjust height.
  • Perforated or ventilated foam: Foam designed with openings or other features intended to improve airflow.
  • Hybrid construction: Memory foam combined with another support system, such as pocket springs.

Because memory foam products vary considerably, it is misleading to assume that every foam pillow feels the same or retains the same amount of heat.

Pocket spring pillow vs memory foam: comparison

Feature Pocket spring pillow Memory foam pillow
Primary support Elastic response from internal springs Contouring response from viscoelastic foam
Feel More responsive, depending on comfort layers Usually more contouring, with slower recovery
Movement Springs respond as pressure changes Foam gradually adapts and recovers
Airflow Spaces around springs can allow internal airflow Depends on foam structure, ventilation and cover
Shape retention Depends on springs and surrounding comfort layers Depends on foam quality and compression over time
Height adjustment Usually a fixed construction Solid foam is generally fixed; shredded-fill models may be adjustable
Best reason to consider Preference for elastic, responsive support Preference for a contouring support feel

This comparison describes common construction characteristics, not laboratory performance rankings. Results vary between individual products.

Which pillow provides better neck support?

Neither construction guarantees better neck support simply because of its material.

A pillow needs to be the right height for your usual sleeping position. It should support your head comfortably without forcing the neck into an excessive angle.

For example, a well-designed memory foam pillow of the correct height may feel more comfortable than a spring pillow that is too tall. The reverse can also be true.

Consider these factors:

  • Side sleepers: Usually need enough height to fill the space between the head and mattress. Shoulder width and mattress softness affect the required height.
  • Back sleepers: Often prefer a height that supports the natural neck curve without pushing the head too far forward.
  • Stomach sleepers: May prefer a lower pillow, although the turned position of the head remains an important consideration.
  • Combination sleepers: May appreciate a responsive construction or the flexibility of an adjustable pillow.

If you do not know your ideal pillow height, see our Adjustable Pillows guide.

Which pillow is better for airflow and temperature comfort?

Pocket spring constructions contain spaces around their internal springs. These spaces can contribute to airflow within the pillow, depending on how the comfort layers and cover are designed.

Memory foam has different thermal characteristics depending on its formulation and construction. Dense foam can feel warmer during prolonged contact, but open-cell structures, ventilation holes and suitable covers can influence temperature comfort.

A spring pillow is therefore not automatically cooler than every memory foam pillow. The complete construction matters.

For people who regularly feel warm around their head and neck, useful features to compare include:

  • internal ventilation and airflow paths;
  • foam perforations and density;
  • cover materials and moisture management;
  • the thickness and type of comfort layers.

Our Cooling Pillows guide explains these differences in more detail.

Which construction lasts longer?

Both spring and memory foam pillows can lose comfort or support over time. What wears out depends on the complete construction.

In a memory foam pillow, factors include foam quality, repeated compression, temperature exposure and maintenance. With a pocket spring pillow, the durability of the springs matters, but so do the surrounding fibre or foam layers.

Some manufacturers publish compression-cycle testing for specific products. These results may provide useful information, but a test of one component does not establish the exact lifespan of an entire pillow in everyday use.

Be cautious about universal claims that one pillow type will last a specific number of years longer than another.

A more practical indicator is whether your pillow continues to maintain a comfortable height and support feel.

The hybrid option: pocket springs with memory foam

The comparison is not always a choice between springs and foam. Some pillows combine both constructions.

The Viscospring Signature has a core of 60 independent pocket springs and a viscoelastic memory foam comfort layer.

The memory foam contributes a contouring surface feel. The pocket springs underneath provide an elastic support structure.

This design may appeal to sleepers who like the feel of memory foam but prefer additional spring responsiveness.

What if you prefer a softer fibre comfort layer?

The Morpheus Firenze uses 60 independent pocket springs with a soft polyester fibre comfort layer instead of the viscoelastic layer found in Viscospring Signature.

This produces a different surface feel while retaining the spring-based support construction.

Both models are made in Italy. Selected model-specific ergonomic ratings are documented in the ErgoCert certification register: five stars for Viscospring (certificate No. 503) and four stars for Morpheus Spring (No. 502).

These assessments relate to the specified certified models, not to every spring pillow.

What does research say about spring pillows and neck discomfort?

A randomized controlled crossover study published in Physical Therapy in 2019 investigated a specific pillow made from viscoelastic polyurethane and 60 independent springs.

The trial recruited 70 adults with chronic nonspecific neck pain, of whom 64 completed the study. Researchers compared the spring pillow with an educational intervention.

The study reported greater improvements in several pain outcomes with the tested pillow. However, it evaluated one particular construction rather than all spring pillows. The research was also funded by the pillow manufacturer.

Read the published spring pillow study.

A systematic review published in 2025 found that existing studies on pillows and chronic neck pain were too varied to establish clear superiority for any single pillow type. The review included five studies with 239 participants and called for stronger research.

Read the systematic review.

The practical conclusion is that pillow height, construction and individual comfort deserve more attention than claims that one material can treat neck pain.

How to choose between pocket springs and memory foam

Before choosing, ask yourself four questions:

  1. Do I prefer contouring or responsiveness? Memory foam typically provides a contouring feel, while springs add an elastic response.
  2. Is the pillow the right height? A suitable height matters regardless of the construction.
  3. Does temperature comfort matter to me? Compare actual ventilation and cover features rather than assuming one material is always cooler.
  4. Do I need adjustable height? If you are unsure of your preferred height, an adjustable-fill pillow may offer more flexibility than a fixed spring or foam design.

Think about the complete pillow, not just one material inside it.

Frequently asked questions

Are pocket spring pillows better than memory foam pillows?

Not for everyone. Pocket springs and memory foam provide different support responses. The better option depends on pillow height, sleeping position and personal comfort.

Are pocket spring pillows firmer?

Not necessarily. The comfort layer above the springs can make a substantial difference. A spring pillow with soft fibre may feel different from a spring pillow with memory foam.

Do spring pillows make noise?

Individually wrapped springs are designed to reduce contact between coils. A properly constructed pillow should not produce distracting noise during normal use, but noise performance depends on the product.

Are memory foam pillows too warm?

Some dense foam constructions may retain more heat during prolonged contact. Other designs use perforations, open-cell materials or breathable covers. Temperature comfort depends on the complete pillow.

Can a spring pillow have memory foam?

Yes. A hybrid pillow can combine a pocket spring support core with a memory foam comfort layer, as in the Viscospring Signature construction.

Can either pillow help with neck pain?

Appropriate pillow height and support may improve comfort, but neither construction is a guaranteed treatment for neck pain. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Final verdict: pocket springs or memory foam?

Choose based on the support feel you prefer and the height that suits your sleeping position.

Memory foam is worth considering if you like a gradual, contouring response. Pocket springs are worth considering if you prefer elastic support. A hybrid design combines elements of both.
