Cooling pillows

Most pillows labelled "cooling" are not structurally cooler. The ones that work have a reason — open-cell gel, pocket springs, or both.

What makes a pillow actually cooler

A pillow feels warm when the material around your head traps body heat and has no way to release it. Standard foam — including most memory foam — is a closed-cell structure. Air cannot move through it. Heat builds up and stays.

A genuinely cooler pillow solves this at the construction level, not the surface level. There are two structural approaches that work.

The first is open-cell gel. Adjustable fill fill consists of small open-cell beads with gaps between them. Air circulates through the fill continuously. Heat does not accumulate because it is constantly being displaced. This is how the Spacepillow works — no foam core, no trapped heat, no off-gassing.

The second is pocket springs. A pillow with springs inside has permanent air channels running the length and width of the fill. These channels are structural — they exist because of the spring geometry, not because of a coating or treatment. The Viscospring Signature uses this construction, combined with a memory foam comfort layer that has 2,000 micro-perforations to maintain airflow even through the foam.

Surface treatments — gel coatings, "cool-touch" covers, phase-change materials — can feel cold initially but do not address the underlying heat retention of the fill. The effect fades within minutes of contact.

Who benefits from a cooling pillow

Not everyone runs hot at night. For people who do, the problem is specific: waking during the night because of heat around the head and neck, or difficulty falling asleep because the pillow feels warm before the body has settled.

A cooling pillow is worth considering if you sleep warm consistently, if you live in a climate where summer nights are hot, if you share a bed and your partner generates significant body heat, or if you use a memory foam mattress that already retains heat — a foam pillow compounds the problem.

It is less relevant if you sleep cold, use natural fiber bedding that breathes well, or if your sleep disruption has other causes.

Viscospring Signature

ErgoCert 5-star · OEKO-TEX · Made in Italy
Pocket spring core + memory foam comfort layer + 2,000 micro-perforations. The springs create structural air channels. The perforations keep airflow moving through the foam. Cooler than a standard memory foam pillow because the construction prevents heat from being trapped. For sleepers who want contouring support and cooling in the same pillow.

Spacepillow

Adjustable fill · All positions
The entire fill is adjustable fill — small beads with continuous air gaps between them. No foam layer, no heat retention. The 3D structure means the fill does not compact flat the way fiber does. For hot sleepers who want a cooling pillow without spring construction.

How the constructions compare

Adjustable fill

Breathable fiber fill. Temperature depends on cover fabric and fill volume. Warmer than spring construction, cooler than dense memory foam.

Pocket springs

Structural air channels between springs allow continuous heat dissipation. Foam layer above has 2,000 perforations — heat moves through rather than being retained. Cooler than solid foam, warmer than adjustable fill.

Memory foam

Closed-cell structure retains heat. Temperature at the surface rises during the night. No airflow through the fill. Noticeably warmer than gel or spring construction under sustained contact.

Surface gel coatings

Feel cold on initial contact. Effect fades within minutes as the coating reaches body temperature. Does not address heat retention of the underlying fill. Not a structural cooling solution.

Cooling pillow questions

Do cooling pillows actually work? Plus

The ones with structural cooling do. Adjustable fill and pocket spring construction both reduce heat accumulation at the fill level — not because of a coating, but because of how the material or structure allows air to move. Surface treatments (gel coatings, cool-touch covers) provide a brief cold sensation but do not solve the underlying retention problem.

What is a cooling pillow? Plus

A cooling pillow uses fill made of small open-cell gel beads rather than foam or fiber. The open-cell structure means air moves freely between the beads continuously. Heat does not accumulate the way it does in closed-cell foam. The Spacepillow uses this construction — no foam core, no off-gassing, consistent temperature through the night.

Is a cooling pillow good for side sleepers? Plus

Depends on the pillow. The Spacepillow is the adjustable entry option — add or remove fill to get the height right for any position. The Viscospring Signature provides cooling through pocket spring construction and is specifically suited to side and back sleepers who need maintained height and neck support.

Can a cooling pillow help with night sweats? Plus

A cooling pillow reduces heat around the head and neck, which is one contributor to night sweats. It will not address night sweats caused by hormonal or medical factors — those require a different intervention. For heat-related night sweating that is not medically driven, a structural cooling pillow is a reasonable first step alongside breathable bedding.

How is Viscospring different from a standard memory foam pillow? Plus

A standard memory foam pillow has no air channels — the closed-cell structure retains heat. The Viscospring Signature has 60 independent pocket springs creating permanent air channels, and 2,000 micro-perforations through the memory foam layer. Heat dissipates rather than accumulates.

Which to choose — Spacepillow or Viscospring? Plus

Choose Spacepillow if height adjustment and flexibility matter most. Choose Viscospring if you want contouring support and structural cooling in the same pillow. Viscospring is the only NOXNOX pillow that is cooler because of its construction, not just its cover.
