The wood is carbonised using a specialised process that produces an unusually hard and dense charcoal.

Although Binchotan is most commonly associated with Japanese cooking, its structure also makes it useful in other applications. One of these is textiles.

How is Binchotan charcoal put into a towel?

A charcoal towel should not simply be imagined as a normal towel covered with charcoal.

In more advanced textile production, the charcoal becomes part of the fibre itself.

For the person using the towel, there is no loose charcoal powder. What you touch is normal textile fibre.

How do charcoal towels work?

The main principle behind charcoal textiles is adsorption.

Charcoal contains a network of very small pores that creates a large internal surface area. Odour molecules can attach themselves to these surfaces.

This is why the correct term is adsorption, rather than absorption.

  • Absorption means a substance enters another material, similar to water entering a sponge.
  • Adsorption means molecules attach to the surface of a material.

Adsorption onto porous materials is an established method of controlling unwanted odours in textiles. Binchotan provides this porous carbon structure inside the textile fibre.

What does Binchotan actually add to a towel?

The simplest explanation is: cotton manages water, while Binchotan helps manage odour.

These functions should not be confused.

A towel's water absorbency depends heavily on factors such as:

  • fibre type;
  • yarn structure;
  • pile length;
  • pile density;
  • fabric construction;
  • textile finishing.

Binchotan should therefore not be treated as a shortcut to making a towel more absorbent.

Its role is different: it adds a functional charcoal component to the textile, primarily for deodorising and odour adsorption.

A well-designed Binchotan towel does not replace conventional textile engineering. It combines it with a functional charcoal fibre.

Does the charcoal wash out?

This depends on how the textile has been manufactured.

A surface treatment and an embedded fibre are not the same thing.

Does a Binchotan towel still need washing?

Yes.

Charcoal technology does not turn a towel into a self-cleaning textile.

Towels still collect:

  • water;
  • skin oils;
  • dead skin cells;

  • other contamination from normal use.

Regular washing therefore remains necessary.

The purpose of incorporating Binchotan into the material is not to eliminate washing. It is to add odour-management functionality between normal washes.

Is Binchotan the same as activated charcoal?

No. The terms are sometimes used too loosely.

Binchotan is a specific type of Japanese charcoal produced using a traditional carbonisation process.

Activated carbon is a broader technical category referring to carbon that has undergone processing to create a particularly developed pore structure and surface area.

Both materials rely on porous carbon surfaces for adsorption, but the terms should not automatically be used as synonyms.

When a textile specifically uses Kishu Binchotan, it is more accurate to identify the material as Kishu Binchotan rather than replacing it with the generic term "activated charcoal".

Is Binchotan the same as bamboo charcoal?

No.

Bamboo charcoal is made from bamboo. Traditional Kishu Binchotan is produced from Ubame oak in Japan.

Both can be used as carbon-based functional materials, but their raw materials, production methods and textile specifications are different.

This is why the term charcoal towel is quite broad. It does not tell you exactly what type of charcoal has been used or how it has been incorporated into the fabric.

Why use Binchotan charcoal in towels?

Towels are a logical application for charcoal textile technology because they repeatedly move between wet and dry conditions.

A bath towel may remain damp for a considerable period after use, particularly in a poorly ventilated or humid bathroom. Odour can consequently become noticeable even before the towel appears visibly dirty.

Embedding an adsorptive material into the textile provides another way to address this particular problem.

It does not replace good towel construction. It complements it.

What does a Binchotan towel feel like?

You do not feel pieces of charcoal.

Once finely ground charcoal has been incorporated into the fibre, the tactile characteristics of the finished towel are determined primarily by its yarn and construction.

Different Binchotan towels can therefore feel very different.

A conventional pile towel can feel soft and substantial, while a gauze-and-pile construction can feel thinner, lighter and dry more quickly.

The presence of charcoal alone does not determine whether a towel is soft, heavy, fluffy or fast drying.
